Greetings, children.
I feel it is my duty to alert you to the Blu-ray release of a classic that is not to be missed: Ladybugs (1992). Ladybugs is the heartbreaking tale of a young soccer prodigy, Matthew (Jonathan Brandis), who is forced by his mother’s boyfriend, Chester (Rodney Dangerfield), to join an all-girls soccer team. Though thinly disguised as a comedy, Brandis plays Matthew’s feminine struggles with a level of precision & depth not seen again until Matt LeBlanc‘s devastating performance in “All the Queen’s Men”(2002). Dangerfield’s desperate, villainous Chester kept me up at night for a week after seeing the movie. And Jackée makes her character seem like Flotsam and Jestsam combined. Truly, I may never recover. Enjoy the film!
Classically,

Stop what you’re doing! Stop right now!! Stop and join me in celebrating Gloria Stuart‘s 100th birthday!!! Take time to recognize this true artist, who thrilled audiences in 1997′s Oscar juggernaut Titanic, a handful of Murder, She Wrote episodes, and a bunch of other shit I haven’t seen. Remember, if it weren’t for Ms. Stuart’s irrepressible talent, we might know whether or not Rose died at the end of Titanic or just went back to sleep. Now if only she weren’t dreaming about that damn Bill Paxton. I hate that guy.
Happy Birthday, Ms Gloria!!!

Greetings, acolytes.
Crushing news: the extraordinary Lynn Redgrave is no longer with us. A member of the esteemed Redgrave family, an acting dynasty almost as fruitful as the Barrymore’s, she provided us with hours of rich, nuanced performance before succumbing to breast cancer yesterday. Many choose to focus memorials on her startling portrayals as the brisk housekeeper in 1998′s “Gods and Monsters” (within the Era of the Classics), or her crushing scene in 2004′s “Kinsey.” I, however, choose to mourn by celebrating her triumphant performance in the 1991 television movie, “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” You’ll notice it, too, was released during the Era of the Classics. Starring alongside her sister Vanessa, Redgrave is simply unforgettable as the title character, a former child star. I read somewhere that this may be a remake, though I cannot be sure. Regardless, there will be a tear in my wine cooler tonight.
Caio.

Greetings, acolytes.
It has taken over two weeks, but I believe I have finally recovered from the April installment of The Encyclopedia Show. As usual, last month’s Show was wrought with so-called artists passing off their deviant creations as art. Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about suffering through such trash again until May 20.

For now, I suggest my students continue to investigate the film reviews of Blaine Edwards & Antoine Merriweather. As I’ve said, their cinematic insight will prove to be invaluable as you learn more about the 1990′s, the era of The Classics. One such masterpiece was released on DVD just last week: “The Jackal“! It’s classic.
Also, my application for transfer was recently denied by The Institute of Human Knowledge and Hygiene. Maybe next month. And does anyone know when Veronica’s Closet comes out on DVD? When will this overlooked Classic get the recognition it deserves?!?
Ciao.
