The Next Encyclopedia Show is February 10th!

Hi, everyone!

Thursday, Feb. 10th, we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day early with a show dedicated to diseases. What? Love and Disease? How do those things come together? Well, come out on Thursday night to the ND at 7:30pm, and see how we connect the two.

Two Great Shows, Two Hot Nights

This week, there’s two opportunities to hear amazing stories and fantastic music from very talented folks here in Austin.

Wednesday night, Betsy Crane hosts another exciting installment of The Awesome! and Great! Reading Show! at DOMY Books (913 E. Cesar Chavez). Musicians inspire writers, and the writers in turn share their brilliance with you. It’s been a while since Betsy’s been in town, so this is gonna be a great party for sure. The show starts at 7pm, but make sure to get there early enough to check out the art books at DOMY.

Then, Thursday night, the ND@501 Studios is filled with awesome reading, music and video art when Teleportal 2.3 shows up. Jess and her crew of artists welcome poets Carrie Fountain and Timothy Donnelly, theatre artist Shannon McCormick, video artist Amanda Joy and Shearwater frontman Jonathan Meiburg. Teleportal is the reading series for folks who wouldn’t otherwise love reading series. Come on out to the ND, grab a drink and enjoy the evening.

We’ll see you out at the shows!

Mortified, Third Anniversary Show!

Everyone! Do you love to laugh? And to revel in others’ misery? Did you despise adolescence? Then there’s nothing you won’t love about MORTIFIED! Austin’s next installment at the U.S. Art Authority this Thursday and Friday night!

The newest kid on the Encyclopedia Show block, The Institute’s own Professional Amateur Historian from Boston Lydia Nelson will be sharing some of her best childhood writing with the audience. And if you know how fantastic her writing is NOW, just imagine how great it was THEN.

In addition to Lydia, you’ll see seven folks sharing their best childhood writing. PLUS the music of The After School Delight, who you saw performing at the Zodiac Encyclopedia Show, last month!!!

It’s like a little literary reunion, and you’re invited to it all. We’ll be there Thursday night, but you can go either (or both) nights!

WHERE: U.S. Art Authority (Next to Spider House, 2905 Fruth St.)
WHEN: 8pm (but get there early for seats and drinks!)

More info at their Facebook invite page. Don’t miss out!

Season 2, Volume 4: HOCKEY!

This Thursday, January 13th, we’re learnin’ ya good ’bout that frozen tundra of a competitive sport: HOCKEY!

Come join the likes of contributors Mystery Science Theatre 3K writer/star Mary Jo Pehl, Paramount Theatre Director Nat Miller, Teleportal Host Jess Sauer, Dionysium President L.B. Deyo, and Detroit refugee Maegan Stephens as they execute a championship-worthy game of epic proportions.

Waiting in the penalty box, but waving their sticks menacingly are the Encyclopedia cast members: Wiki Lake, The Lord Professor Michael Patrick Slefinger, Stepdad Ron, Professional Amateur Massachusetts Historian Lydia Nelson.

And introducing the dulcet tones of the Encyclopedia Show Band: Boonesboro!

With a special appearance by Drag Superstar and recent winner of Mr. Gay Williamson County: Stan Lee Cupp, reprising his title-winning performance.

Oh, and Mike and Ralph.

Pre-show and music starts at 7:30pm
Show starts promptly at 8:13pm

ND@501 Studios

A whole weekend of Indie Lit!

This coming weekend is going to be chock full of indie lit at the ND, and you don’t want to miss out on any of the awesome action. Performances! Vidoes! People! Shopping!

On Friday night, it’s THE ENCYCLOPEDIA SHOW: ZODIAC! We’ve got all the best of the best happening to celebrate the signs of the stars! We’ll be joined by MC Eats, Audra Schroeder, Kurt Hildebrand, Alexis Davis and The After School Delight. Come and see what they have in store for you.

On Saturday night, it’s TELEPORTAL READINGS! This is the reading series made for people who hate reading series–complete with literature, creative video work and awesome musical artists. Teleportal is what might happen if LeVar Burton hijacked the holodeck for a Reading Rainbow afterparty.

And all day Sunday, representatives from The Encyclopedia Show, Teleportal, 5 Things and American Short Fiction will be hosting THE INDIE LIT ROADSHOW. From 12-9p, the ND will be filled with sellable books and more from the independent booksellers in town like Domy Books, BookWoman, American Short Fiction, Bat City Review, Monofonous Press and Effing Press! So many books! So many performances! Get your holiday shopping done here and support the indie lit scene in our town!

(Party of) 5 Things!

Always wanted to see our fearless Encyclopedia hosts perform one of their own works at a show? Now’s the time to do it! Mike is performing a story at 5 Things this Wednesday, Dec. 1st at 7pm at the USAA!

The show’s theme is Awkward Family Stories, and he’s got plenty of them. So get ready for a night of great readers and host extraordinaires Amelia and Stacy.

See you there!

T shirts for sale!

Everyone! We’re making Encyclopedia Show T-shirts! That you can wear! Outside! And inside!

They’re going to be so great, and we’re ordering them from Hill Top Print Shop and they should be here for our next show! You can buy one! And then wear it! I can’t wwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttt!

Here’s what they’ll look like…kind of. (Really the background will be darker gray and the ink will be darker orange, but that’s how it came out in the jpeg machine so suck it.)

But LOOK!:

Super Secret Encyclopedia Show

Can’t wait until October to get your Encyclopedia Show fix?

Well, we’ve got a mini-performance this week at The Blanton Museum’s THIRD THURSDAYS event! The Museum will be open late and feature yoga in the galleries, artists talks, gallery tours, book signings, wine and pizza specials and, oh, right . . . THE ENCYCLOPEDIA SHOW!

This looks too fancy for us, doesn't it?

Join Mike and Katelyn in welcoming new Encylofriends Nicole Martin and Lydia Nelson as well as familiar Encylofaces Mike Slefinger, Kyle Schultz and Nance Riffe as they present pieces on and about school. We’ll be kicking things off around 7:30pm on the second floor of the Museum.

Join us, won’t you?

True Stories of Professional Wrestling

We’re excited to see future Encyclopedia contributor Lashonda Lester premiere her solo show “Shondee Superstar: This Sh!t Really Happened” on Saturday night at 9:30 pm at the New Movement Theater!

Come see this brilliant comedienne share some of her best stories from her life as a child actress, a pro-wrestling personality, an anti-war activist, a political pundit, a stand up comic and a whole lot more.

Seriously, this is going to be a good one.

The Story Department

This is where we’ll be Thursday night!

It’s not a reading, but you’ll hear stories. It’s not stand-up, but you’ll probably laugh. What is it? It’s the Story Department, a new monthly series of storytelling evenings to benefit Austin Bat Cave, a writing & tutoring center for kids. Each month we bring you new stories based on a new theme.

This month’s theme is Bad Habits. Storytellers lined up to date: L.B. Deyo, Shannon McCormick, John Spong, Katherine Tanney, Jill Alexander Essbaum, and Consuelo Allen.

Tickets are $5, and proceeds benefit Austin Bat Cave programs.

The Story Department is inspired by The Moth, a series of live storytelling performances established in NYC in 1997.
